The more I discover, the more I realize that the system is set up to keep the average citizen OUT of elected service. Today, I visited the State Board of Elections folks to make sure that my paperwork is turned in correctly, since they had been informed that I had rumbled about filing in February 2012. Super, super nice people. Yet, they are all cogs in a machine that is too large and unwieldy. One individual even muttered sotte voce that the politicians in charge set it up to BE this way.
Did you know:
I need 85,379 signatures from registered voters on petition paperwork to run as an Independent in North Carolina. Those signatures must include at least 200 each in at least 4 of the separate Congressional districts. (For the record, I’m good with that-I believe that for far too long, the bulk of our 100 counties have been under-represented.)
If I were to run for President of the US, I would also need…..85,379 signatures.
If I wanted to start and register my own political party, I would need-you guessed it-85,379 signatures.
500 signatures to be a write-in candidate.
10,000 signatures to be a primary candidate for one of the two major parties.
Somebody tell me how this makes any damn sense at all.
